Biographie

Romain Gilbert étudie le piano et le chant au Conservatoire régional de Paris. Après des études d’ingénieur, il s’oriente vers la gestion artistique et culturelle. Il obtient sa licence de Musicologie et son Master de Gestion et Administration de la Musique à l’Université Paris Sorbonne. Il devient administrateur de l’Association pour le Rayonnement de l’Opéra de Paris. Après plusieurs expériences de production au Théâtre du Châtelet, au Chœur de chambre Accentus et à l’Opéra national de Paris, il travaille aux côtés de Jean-François Zygel puis prend la direction de la production de l’Orchestre des Musiciens du Louvre dirigé par Marc Minkowski.

 

Il s’oriente alors vers la mise en scène en assistant successivement Laurent Pelly à la Monnaie de Bruxelles puis Ivan Alexandre à l’Opéra de Drottningholm en Suède, à l’Opéra royal de Versailles, au Liceu de Barcelone puis à Bordeaux et en Italie dans une trilogie Mozart / Da Ponte. Il reprend ensuite Le Journal d’un disparu d’Ivo Van Hove. Il travaille aux côtés de Damian Szifron dans une production de Samson et Dalila au Staatsoper de Berlin dirigée par Daniel Barenboim, reprise au Teatro San Carlo de Naples en 2022. Il rejoint Krystian Lada à l’Opéra royal de Copenhague pour la création de The Mysteries of Desire puis Claus Guth au Liceu de Barcelone pour Parsifal.

 

Romain Gilbert est régulièrement invité à l’Opéra de Bordeaux où il a mis en scène La Périchole en 2018 reprise à l’Opéra de Versailles, puis Carmen en 2021 et Werther en 2022 (avec Benjamin Bernheim dans le rôle-titre).

 

Le Palazzetto Bru Zane lui confie la mise en scène du diptyque d’opéras bouffes Un mari dans la serrure / Lischen et Fritzchen au Théâtre du Jeu de Paume d’Aix-en-Provence et au Théâtre Marigny à Paris. Il conçoit aussi leur soirée de Gala au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Il collabore avec l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris, l’Orchestre national de Lyon, et l’Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse pour des programmes mis en espace. La Philarmonie du Luxembourg fait appel à lui pour créer Les Quatre saisons de Buenos Aires, Le Voyage de Don Quichotte et La Fée Oriane.

 

Il met en espace Cosi fan tutte au Festival Enescu à Bucarest, La Périchole au Festival de Pentecôte de Salzbourg et au Festival de Radio France, La Clemeza di Tito au Théâtre des Etats de Prague, Les Contes d’Hoffmann à Baden Baden et Brême. Cette saison, il met en espace Orphée aux enfers à la Elbphilarmonie de Hambourg.

 

Il devient collaborateur à la mise en scène pour La Vie parisienne aux côtés de Christian Lacroix à l’Opéra de Rouen, l’Opéra de Tours, l’Opéra de Liège et au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées; production reprise cette saison à l’Opéra de Limoges et à l’Opéra de Montpellier. Il signe la conception et la mise en scène de Ballad in RED autour des oeuvres d’Edgar Allan Poe à Wingerthur avec le harpiste Emmanuel Ceysson.

 

Cette saison, Romain Gilbert met en scène Carmen à l’Opéra de Rouen, Roméo et Juliette à l’Opéra de Dallas (avec Golda Schultz) et La Gioconda au Teatro San Carlo de Naples (avec Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Anita Rachvelichvili et Ludovic Tézier dans les rôles principaux).

Romain Gilbert studied piano and singing at the Paris Regional Conservatory. After studying engineering, he turned to artistic and cultural management. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Musicology and his Master’s degree in Music Management and Administration from Paris Sorbonne University. He became administrator of the Association pour le Rayonnement de l’Opéra de Paris. After a number of production experiences at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Accentus Chamber Choir and the Opéra national de Paris, he worked alongside Jean-François Zygel, before becoming production director of the Orchestre des Musiciens du Louvre under Marc Minkowski.

 

He then turned to directing, successively assisting Laurent Pelly at La Monnaie in Brussels, Ivan Alexandre at Drottningholm Opera in Sweden, the Opéra Royal de Versailles, the Liceu in Barcelona, Bordeaux and Italy in a Mozart/Da Ponte trilogy. He then took over Le Journal d’un disparu by Ivo Van Hove. He worked alongside Damian Szifron in a production of Samson et Dalila at the Berlin Staatsoper, directed by Daniel Barenboim, which was revived at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 2022. He joins Krystian Lada at the Royal Opera of Copenhagen for the premiere of The Mysteries of Desire, then Claus Guth at Barcelona’s Liceu for Parsifal.

 

Romain Gilbert is a regular guest at the Opéra de Bordeaux, where he staged La Périchole in 2018 and again at the Opéra de Versailles, followed by Carmen in 2021 and Werther in 2022 (with Benjamin Bernheim in the title role).

 

The Palazzetto Bru Zane commissions him to stage the opera buffa diptych Un mari dans la serrure / Lischen et Fritzchen at the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume in Aix-en-Provence and the Théâtre Marigny in Paris. He also designed their Gala evening at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. He collaborates with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, the Orchestre national de Lyon, and the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse for programs set in space. The Philarmonie du Luxembourg called on him to create Les Quatre saisons de Buenos Aires, Le Voyage de Don Quichotte and La Fée Oriane.

 

He staged Cosi fan tutte at the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, La Périchole at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival and the Radio France Festival, La Clemeza di Tito at the Prague State Theatre, Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Baden Baden and Bremen. This season, he is staging Orphée aux enfers at Hamburg’s Elbphilarmonie.

 

He also collaborated with Christian Lacroix on the staging of La Vie parisienne at the Opéra de Rouen, Opéra de Tours, Opéra de Liège and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, a production which will be repeated this season at Opéra de Limoges and Opéra de Montpellier. He designed and directed Ballad in RED, based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, in Wingerthur with harpist Emmanuel Ceysson.

 

This season, Romain Gilbert is staging Carmen at the Opéra de Rouen (with Marianne Crebassa in the title role), Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet at the Dallas Opera (with Golda Schultz) and La Gioconda at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples (with Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Anita Rachvelichvili and Ludovic Tézier in the lead roles).
